Celso cites Chong Hua studes’ feats

Mayor Celso Lobregat has expressed pride and admiration to 24 Zamboanga Chong Hua High School students who won in national and international mathematics and science competitions held during the school year 2009-2010 saying the students did not only bring honor to their school but to Zamboanga City as well.

“We made sure that this courtesy call is done the earliest time possible to personally let you know that we are very proud of you,” Mayor Lobregat said as he welcomed the students together with their parents and School Principal Dr. Simon Chua to City Hall yesterday afternoon.

The students won in different international and national competitions held in Australia, South Africa, USA, China and Manila. The list include Zheng Rong S. Wu; Ethan Riley Chan; Justin Bryce Torres; Hanz Vladimir Cabanez; Xavier Jefferson Ray M. Go; Vicente Raphael Chan; Sabrina Rae Chan; Shawn Gabriele O. Cabanes; Steve HK T. Ng; Rachel G. Rojo; Carlo Patrik T. Tan; Samuel M. Chiu; Antonie Kyla S. Lim; Antonie Kyna S. Lim; Marion Antonio Lim; Tonita Mari S. Lim; Ian Chesteron T. Lim; Kennichi M. Tan; Maedeliene K. Uy; Gene B. Go Jr.; Meliton R. Chiong III; Dominique S. Lim; Nicole Leanne Y. Wee and Keighley Shane Y. Wee Ebol.

“You brought honor not only to the Zamboanga Chong Hua High School but also to the entire Zamboanga City and we’re very proud and honoured because we have your principal Mr. Simon Chua, who is responsible in making sure that Chong Hua excel in competitions not only in Mathematics and Science but in other fields as well,” Mayor Lobregat declared during the students’ courtesy call which coincided with a meeting he had with different agencies and visitors from Manila at the City Hall conference room yesterday afternoon.

Among the 24 medal haulers, most bemedalled was Wu, who garnered gold medals in the International Regions Math League held in Las Vegas, USA and in the 2009 Philippine International Mathematics Competition held in Ilo-ilo City Philippines; silver and bronze medals in the 10th Invitational World Youth Mathematics Intercities competition-2009 held in Durban, South Africa, 6th China South East Mathematical Olympiad held in Nanchang, China and Parallel National Mathematics Competition held in Ilo-ilo City; national champion in the 6th PYSC Science Olympiad-High School level; second place in the national level and first place in Mindanao in the 12th Philippine Math Olympiad; and bagged the prudence award in the 2009 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC).

Mayor Lobregat is expected to issue an executive order expressing the city’s appreciation and commendation not only to the individual students but also to the school principal, who has been the guiding spirit in the students’ undertakings.

In previous years, the ZCHHS also made well in national and international competitions in Math and Science.

In his letter to Mayor Lobregat, Mr. Chua said the students’ “marks of distinction are not only honor and recognition for our school but also for the city of Zamboanga and its people.”

He described the courtesy call on Mayor Lobregat in City Hall as another defining moment for the students “because their efforts and success will be acknowledged by no less than the Zamboanga City’s Local Chief Executive.”

“Furthermore, we are very grateful and appreciative to you for your unremitting support to Zamboanga Chong Hua High School,” Mr. Chua added. (Sheila Covarrubias)
