Deadline for entries for the annual Chabacano Song Festival is set today, October 2.

Submission venues are the Barangay Affairs division in City Hall or the City Tourism and Promotions Division at the Sunken Garden.

The chabacano songest, now on its 27th year, is one of the city government initiated activities in line with the 2009 Zamboanga Hermosa Festival. It is slated for October 9 at the Roof deck of the Garden Orchid Hotel in Gov. Camins. Big cash prizes are at stake for the top 3 winners.

The chabacano songfest was first held in 1982 through the initiative of the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat when she was still the president of the First United Broadcasting Corporation (FUBC) with the main objective of preserving the chabacano language.

Mayor Celso Lobregat has continued on the tradition of holding the chabacano songfest as one of the highlights during the Zamboanga Hermosa festivities in line with his thrust to preserve and conserve the chabacano language.

City Hall Executive Assistant Becky Fonollera, contest coordinator said entries must be original compositions with lyrics in Chabacano.

Elimination will be held on Monday, October 5 at the Jardin Maria Clara in Pasonanca. Walk in entries will be accepted on the day of the elimination. (Sheila Covarrubias)
