The city’s Sangguniang Kabataaan Federation under the leadership of Councilor Joefel de las Penas has intensified its advocacy on voters’ registration to encourage people especially the youths to actively participate in the forthcoming 2010 elections.

To highlight the campaign, the Federation yesterday held a motorcade around town to heighten awareness on the need for youths and other unregistered individuals of voting age to list up with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

The COMELEC has set October 31, 2009 as the deadline for the registration of new and unregistered voters for the May 2010 elections. Transfer of precincts and other changes are also welcomed within the period.

The motorcade yesterday kicked off on two points: Culianan barangay for District II SK participants and Ayala barangay for District 1 SK participants. They all converged at the Paseo del Mar and altogether proceeded to the COMELEC office for the registration of new voters.

De las Penas said the SK Federation will continuously pursue other activities to encourage mass registration of the unregistered voters especially the youths who have reached the voting age.

He said the youths should let their voices be heard by actively participating in the 2010 elections and help ensure continuous progress and development for Zamboanga City.

Apart from the motorcade, there will also be advocacies through the media and other forums concerning the importance or registering with the COMELEC.

As this developed, Mayor Celso Lobregat cheered the SK officers and members from the different barangays who participated in the motorcade and are actively taking part in the awareness campaign, as he cited the very essential role played by the youth sector in nation building.

He reaffirmed his belief on the power of youth and urged the youths to take advantage of the opportunities given or offered to them. (Sheila Covarrubias)
